Tubuh bijih Grasberg ditambang dengan menggunakan cara penambangan terbuka, yang cocok untuk Grasberg karena keberadaannya yang dekat dengan permukaan. Dengan penambangan terbuka, maka dimungkinkan pengerahan peralatan berat untuk pekerjaan tanah yang sangat besar, yang mampu mencapai tingkat penambangan yang tinggi pada biaya satuan yang paling rendah.
Pada tambang terbuka Grasberg digunakan peralatan shovel dan truk besar untuk menambang bahan. Bahan tersebut termasuk klasifikasi bijih atau limbah, tergantung dari nilai ekonomis bahan tersebut. Alat shovel menggali bahan pada daerah-daerah berbeda di dalam tambang terbuka, dan memuat bahan ke atas truk angkut untuk dibawa keluar tambang terbuka.
Bijih ditempatkan ke dalam alat penghancur bijih dan diangkut ke pabrik pengolahan (mill) untuk diproses. Batuan limbah (overburden) dibuang dengan truk ke daerah-daerah penempatan yang telah ditentukan, atau ke dalam alat penghancur OHS pada jalan HEAT untuk ditempatkan di Wanagon Bawah di samping alat penimbun (stacker).
Sarana-sarana utama yang ada pada lokasi tambang terbuka termasuk bengkel-bengkel perawatan, tambang batu gamping dan pabrik pemrosesan, serta fungsi pendukung lainnya dan perkantoran.
Lazimnya, bahan-bahan dan perlengkapan dibawa ke lokasi tambang terbuka dengan menggunakan tram. Alat berat diangkut dengan menggunakan wheeled lowboy melalui Jalan HEAT, yang merupakan infrastruktur yang terbukti sangat vital untuk pengangkutan jenis peralatan yang diperlukan di tambang terbuka Grasberg yang sangat besar.
Pengembangan
Pengembangan tambang terbuka Grasberg dilakukan dengan menambang sejumlah daerah (pushback) secara bersamaan. Setiap pushback merupakan bagian dari sebuah rencana pengembangan berjangka lebih panjang untuk menambang cadangan. Beberapa pushback perlu waktu bertahun-tahun untuk memindahkan overburden sebelum bijih terpapar.
Di Grasberg, pushback kami yang utama yang menghasilkan bijih adalah 6N. Jadwal pelepasan bijih berkadar tinggi didasarkan atas pemindahan overburden tepat sebelum bijih ditambang. Ketika satu pushback selesai dikerjakan, maka pushback berikutnya, overburdennya telah dikupas sehingga bisa mulai menghasilkan bijih. Jadwal keseluruhan tambang terbuka dirancang guna memaksimalkan nilai bersih terkini (net present value) dari sumber daya tersebut.
Penempatan Overburden
Overburden adalah batuan tanpa nilai ekonomis atau yang nilai ekonomisnya kecil, yang membungkus atau mengelilingi sebuah cadangan. Sepanjang masa Grasberg, sekitar 3,4 miliar ton metrik overburden akan ditambang guna menyingkap 1,4 miliar ton metrik bijih yang bernilai ekonomis. Overburden terdiri dari sejumlah jenis batu alam yang berbeda, termasuk batu gamping. Overburden ditempatkan di daerah-daerah yang memungkinkan tambang terbuka dikembangkan sedekat mungkin untuk mengurangi biaya.
Daerah-daerah utama tersebut berada di padang rumput Carstensz dan daerah Wanagon di sebelah barat dan utara. Overburden tersebut diangkut menuju daerah-daerah tersebut terutama di atas truk. Di Wanagon Bawah, truk tersebut menuang batuan tersebut ke dalam alat penghancur yang ada pada jalan HEAT, dan bahan tersebut di kirim ke alat penimbun (stacker) yang akan menempatkan bahan di Wanagon Bawah. Sepanjang masa tambang terbuka, rasio pengupasan (perbandingan overburden yang dipindahkan terhadap bijih) adalah 2,5 di mana dari 1990 - 2005 rasionya adalah 2,8 dan diperkirakan dari saat ini hingga akhir masa tambang terbuka, rasionya 2,2. Saat tambang terbuka selesai dikerjakan, daerah-daerah overburden kelak sudah dihijaukan kembali.

Saat ini kami memanfaatkan 17 shovel besar dan 148 truk pengangkut untuk menambang permukaan Grasberg.
Keunggulan Operasional
Program-program peningkatan yang tengah berjalan terpusat pada penggerak nilai didalam operasional kami, yakni Grasberg. Upaya-upaya awal berhasil menetapkan sasaran produktivitas dari armada truk dan shovel kami. Fokus dari prakarsa-prakarsa adalah peningkatan produktivitas truk dan shovel, pengeboran dan peledakan (drilling dan blasting), scorecard operator, pemeliharaan lokasi, pengurangan inventaris, shift/jadwal, pelatihan penyeliaan garis depan, dan penggunaan kendaraan ringan. Seiring dengan pencapaian sasaran produktivitas, kami melakukan identifikasi terhadap peluang pengurangan biaya. Salah satunya adalah tenaga kerja, yang terpusat pada penyelarasan lokasi kerja, tingkatan penugasan, dan peningkatan pelatihan dari pekerja baru yang direkrut dari lembaga pelatihan kami.
Golden HorseshoePengaturan urutan dalam penambangan "golden horseshoe" di dalam lubang Grasberg dapat menghasilkan beberapa variasi produksi logam dari waktu ke waktu.
Kami tetap melakukan analisa rencana jangka yang lebih panjang untuk menilai rancangan optimal terhadap tambang terbuka Grasberg, yang dapat berpengaruh terhadap pengaturan waktu pengembangan block cave Grasberg bawah tanah. Rencana kami yang terdahulu mencakup transisi dari tambang terbuka Grasberg ke block cave Grasberg pada tahun 2015. Kami mempunyai dua sarana tram dari mill ke tambang. Yang pertama dibuat pada tahun 1971 dan saat ini digunakan untuk membawa peralatan, bahan, dan orang, selain untuk mengangkut bijih dari tambang ke mill. Ketika dibangun, tram tersebut merupakan tram udara dengan jarak bebas terpanjang didunia. Tram kedua dibangun pada tahun 1989. Setelah pembangunan system ore pass pada tahun 1989, kami tak lagi menggunakan tram untuk mengirim bijih ke mill.

LONG HARBOUR, Nfld. (CP) -- Armed with nothing more than a rod and reel, Andy Murphy is an unlikely environmental warrior, waging a fight against a plan to dump thousands of tonnes of mining waste into a trout pond in southeastern Newfoundland.


The battleground is Sandy Pond, a small tranquil lake not far from Long Harbour on the Avalon Peninsula, about 100 kilometres west of St. John's.


It is at the centre of a simmering dispute that pits environmental concerns against the hope for jobs in a region that desperately needs them.


"I can't believe that our federal politicians or our provincial politicians are going to allow it," said Murphy, a 56-year-old commercial and recreational fisherman.


"It's just one pond, but it's something like saying the Atlantic Ocean is just one ocean, and I can't believe that they're going to destroy it."


Mining giant Vale Inco intends to use Sandy Pond as a dump for mine tailings produced by its proposed $C2-billion nickel-processing plant at Long Harbour.


The company's environmental impact statement calls for the water basin to serve as a receptacle for more than 400,000 tonnes of effluent annually, including nickel, copper and cobalt. The nickel facility would also emit 555,000 kilograms of chemicals, including sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and lead, into the air every year.


The federal and provincial cabinets are expected to announce their decisions on the environmental impact statement this summer.


The plan has divided the residents of Long Harbour.


The town of 211 - down from 522 in 1991 - is still reeling from the closure of a toxin-spewing phosphorus plant and the commercial cod fishery nearly 20 years ago.


"This region has been hit heavy over the past two decades," said Mayor Gary Keating, a supporter of the proposed nickel facility.


A project of this magnitude would revive Keating's community economically and play a major role in securing a prosperous future for Newfoundland and Labrador as a whole, he said.


The nickel plant is expected to be the first of four massive ventures to come online in Newfoundland - including the Hebron offshore oil development, the Lower Churchill hydroelectric project and an oil refinery - that would pour billions of dollars into the province. Construction could begin as early as next year.


Despite its anticipated economic benefits, the facility has generated fierce opposition.


On his back deck, Gerard Brothers points to a one-kilometre-long heap of slag jutting out of Placentia Bay, the remnant waste of the phosphorus plant.


"I grew up with pollution and I don't want to see no more pollution," the 52-year-old said.


With his daughter and wife out of work, Brothers says he struggles as his family's sole breadwinner.


"I should be one of the ones that want to see this, shouldn't I? Not for the environmental cost," the high school caretaker said.


"If that plant is coming over here, I don't want to live here."


But others say it's worth sacrificing one fish pond in a province that has thousands of them.


"To talk about this pond like it's the end of this world, it's pretty crazy," said Bob Murphy, a 51-year-old resident of nearby Dunville.


"We're dead here, we're finished here if we don't get something like that."


In 2002, changes were implemented to the federal Fisheries Act that allowed Ottawa to classify natural water bodies as tailing impoundment areas. The amended law requires mining companies that propose to dump waste into fish-bearing lakes and rivers to devise a plan to compensate for habitat loss.


In 2006, after the federal government allowed Aur Resources Inc. to dump tailings into two ponds in central Newfoundland for a copper-zinc operation, environmentalists warned water bodies across Canada would become junkyards for mining companies.


Since then, 15 mining projects have proposed to use water bodies as tailings ponds, according to Environment Canada.


"This has become a bit of a plague, quite frankly," said Catherine Coumans, a researcher with Ottawa-based MiningWatch Canada.


Coumans points out that other countries, including the United States, do not allow water bodies to be reclassified as dumps for the mining industry.


"We're feeling quite desperate about this right now," she said. "Every lake that's destroyed is a lake that's destroyed forever. We're not going to get that lake back."


Chris Doiron, chief of mining for Environment Canada, said comparisons with the practices of other countries is unfair because of differences in topography and water availability.


"There is no question that we understand that this has to be very carefully considered and that's where we think we are," Doiron said.


NDP fisheries critic Peter Stoffer said the reclassification of lakes and rivers amounts to a subsidy for the mining industry. He said he finds it laughable that mining companies would argue that tailings ponds pose less environmental harm than man-made pits.


"That's nonsense," Stoffer said.


"The only reason they're using a freshwater lake to dump their tailings in is because it's cheaper."


In Vale Inco's case, that's true. After evaluating 12 options for waste storage, it concluded that a man-made containment would cost $490 million. Converting Sandy Pond would cost $62 million.


But company spokesman Bob Carter said an excavated pit would leave a larger ecological footprint.


"Just by way of illustration, it would be an area of about 9,200 Olympic swimming pools in terms of its capacity," Carter said.


"Even if you remove the economic, or financial criteria from the equation, Sandy Pond still is the best alternative."


Keating said he understands why some residents in his town would have their reservations, though he adds that those concerns are overblown.


"If you don't sacrifice our surroundings to some degree, you can never have anything," he said.


"That's life."


As part of its plan to compensate for the loss of fish habitat, subject to approval by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Vale Inco would transfer fish out of Sandy Pond into two smaller nearby ponds. Those ponds would be flooded to create one larger lake to hold the extra fish.


But concerns remain that waterfowl could still be exposed to harmful chemicals in the tailings pond.


In its environmental impact statement, Vale Inco said short exposures to the water would not be lethal to birds, and that bird ingestion of Sandy Pond water would be "occasional and acute, rather than chronic," because there are other water bodies nearby.


Vale Inco has not yet determined whether the plant would use hydrometallurgical technology - considered to be more energy efficient than traditional smelting methods - to extract nickel from Voisey's Bay concentrate in Labrador.


The company is expected to decide whether that technology is economically and technically feasible by November.

The 50-50 joint venture between BHP and state-owned Antam in eastern Indonesia has raised fears for marine life in the rich waters off Gag Island in West Papua province.



The companies have released few details of the plan, which is subject to their boards' approvals, but a BHP Billiton spokeswoman in Melbourne said it related to deposits on Gag and Halmahera Island in North Maluku.



She could not confirm reports that it could lead to the development of a 4.9-billion-dollar nickel smelter. "This is really early days. The agreement's conditional on approval by the boards of BHP Billiton and Antam. The BHP Billiton board hasn't yet approved any specific project," she told AFP.



Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board has said the joint venture will involve the creation of nickel mines and refineries in Maluku and West Papua valued at 2.5 billion dollars.



The forests of Gag Island, adjacent to the Raja Ampat island group off the western tip of the Papuan mainland, are technically protected but in 2004 the government allowed exceptions for certain companies to mine there.



The removal of the restrictions came amid reports that BHP was pressuring Jakarta to drop environmental obstacles to the island's exploitation. BHP has denied these allegations in the past.



The United Nations' education and scientific agency, UNESCO, has been considering putting the Raja Ampat and Gag islands on its world heritage list as the richest area of marine biodiversity on earth.



"Most mining companies have an agreement that you don't mine in world heritage sites," UNESCO environmental scientist Koen Meyers said. But because the islands are only nominated for heritage listing the Indonesian government "has the decision" on mining, he said.



The islands' formal listing as a heritage site had been stalled by Jakarta's failure to designate them as a national park. "The problem with Raja Ampat is that it does not have the highest protection status in the country," Meyers said.



Siti Maimunah, executive director of mining watchdog Jatam, said the joint venture was a "scandal." "It's a scandal for a company from a developed country to mine an area with some of the richest biodiversity in the world," Maimunah said.

"The economy in the region will collapse. Traditional fishing will die and the locals will lose their land."



Conservation International Indonesia director Jatna Supriatna said irresponsible large-scale mining could pose a major risk to the entire ecosystem. "Exploration on Gag Island has started but we hope that before exploiting the island's rich nickel deposits the companies' environmental impact analysis is carefully done," he said.

"If they dump their tailing into the sea ... the tailings will impact the Raja Ampat islands and destroy an area that has been proposed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site." He said small-scale illegal mining was already rampant in the Raja Ampat islands.



The joint venture comes amid a long-term trend of rising nickel prices, which have doubled in the past five years driven by demand from China for stainless steel.

Jakarta has been desperate to boost foreign direct investment, particularly in the mining sector where companies have complained of confusing regulations and red tape.

Indonesia wants to renegotiate its contract with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, the world's second-largest copper producer, potentially cutting output and increasing royalties from its Grasberg mine, a minister said.

"Both parties must agree to change the contract of work," Purnomo Yusgiantoro, the minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, said Monday. The government wants to lower the daily output ceiling at the mine and increase local smelting, Purnomo said.

Freeport, based in Phoenix, Arizona, has not received formal notice of the plan, Mindo Pangaribuan, a spokesman for the company's Indonesian unit, said by telephone Monday.

Grasberg accounted for 4 percent of all copper mined last year, and lower output may extend this year's 18 percent rally in prices on the London Metal Exchange. The mine, located in Papua province, operates under a 30-year contract signed in 1992, which may be extended for as many as 20 years.

"It has to be a win-win situation, and cannot be at the expense of the company or it will send a bad signal to mining companies," Ahmad Solihin, an analyst at Mandiri Sekuritas in Jakarta, said by telephone. "It has to be agreed to by both parties."

Indonesia wants to lower maximum daily production at Grasberg to between 200,000 tons and 250,000 tons of copper ore from 300,000 tons, Purnomo said in Jakarta. The proposal comes after a state audit of the mine's operations. The company targets daily output of 220,000 tons to 230,000 tons under a five-year plan, Pangaribuan, of Freeport, said.

The government also wants as much as 50 percent of Grasberg's output to be smelted at a facility in East Java province, the minister said. At present, the smelter processes about 30 percent of the mine's output.

Shares in Freeport, which is led by Richard Adkerson, have gained 63 percent over the past 12 months, and settled at $86.46 in New York on Friday. The company said last month that second-quarter profit gained to $1.17 billion from $382 million a year earlier, bolstered by the $26 billion acquisition of Phelps Dodge.

"It is not easy" to amend the U.S. company's contract of work, Purnomo said Monday, adding that any changes needed to be agreed to through negotiations.

Still, "we have not received any notification," said Pangaribuan, the spokesman for Freeport's Indonesian unit. "The royalty is calculated on a quarterly basis using a complex formula related to copper prices and production."

Grasberg is second only to Escondida in Chile in terms of copper output. Freeport plans to produce 1.1 billion pounds of copper from the site this year, compared with 1.2 billion pounds in 2006. Gold output may gain 6 percent to 1.8 million ounces.

Three-month copper futures in London traded at $7,506 per metric ton in late afternoon trading in Jakarta on Monday.

JAYAPURA (Antara): PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and Papua's provincial
government are set to build a cement factory using the giant US-based copper
and mining company's tailings waste as feedstock, a PTFI spokesman said.
The cement factory project would be carried out based on a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) signed by Papua Governor Barnabas Suebu and PTFI
President Director Armando Mahler some time ago, PTFI spokesman Mindo
Pangaribuan said Wednesday.
"The aim of building the factory is to help process PTFI's tailings into
cement products. Actually, some of PTFI's tailings are already being used in
various projects in Timika. The waste can also be used in other places for
infrastructure development," he said.
Mindo did not mention the details of the project, saying these matters were
up to the provincial government to decide.(*)

JUBI - Maret 2007 lalu hujan yang mengguyur hanya beberapa hari saja telah memutuskan tiga jembatan dan rumah rumah di tepi sungai pun ikut hancur. Bahkan kini sumber sumber air di kawasan Cykloops pun ikut terganggu karena terancam kering. Menurut data dari WWF Region Sahul Papua di kaki Gunung Cykloop 34 anak-anak sungai tetapi yang masih mengalir lancar hanya 14 anak sungai saja.
Kepala Dinas Pertambangan Provinsi Papua Toto Purwanto kepada wartawan di Jayapura mengatakan bahwa penambangan nikel di kawasan Cagar Alam Cykloops tak bisa dilakukan karena penyimpan sumber air bersih bagi penduduk di Kota Jayapura dan Kabupaten Jayapura.
Bahkan hal senada juga dilontarkan Kepala Dinas Kehutanan Provinsi Papua Ir Marthin Kajoi dalam tingkatan kawasan konservasi jelas kawasan Cagar Alam sangat tinggi perannya sebagai kawasan yang dilindungi. “ Kami jelas tak bisa memberikan rekomendasi dan ini harus melalui ijin Menteri Kehutanan di Jakarta,” ujar Kajoi menanggapi pertanyaan Jubi seputar tambang di kawasan Cagar Alam Cykloops belum lama ini di Jayapura.
Sesuai dengan peruntukannya maka kawasan Cykloop sendiri sejak jaman Pemerintahan Belanda sudah ditetapkan sebagai kawasan hutan lindung. Mulai 1974 pemerintah Indonesia menetapkannya menjadi kawasan Cagar Alam Cykloop. Kebijakan ini lalu ditetapkan dengan Surat Keputusan Menteri Pertanian No.56/Kpts/Um/101/1978 tanggal 26 januari 1978. Luas areal dalam kawasan Cagar Alam yang telah ditetapkan seluas 22.520 Ha.
Pegunungan Cycloops yang terbentang dari Kota Jayapura, dan sebagian distrik di Kabupaten Jayapura, Papua menyimpan berbagai jenis tambang. Salah satunya yang adalah nikel.
Walau kedua pejabat di atas mengatakan tidak mungkin melakukan eksploitasi tambang nikel di Depapre dan Ormu tetapi berdasar Ijin Kuasa Pertambangan dari Pemerintah Provinsi Papua maka eksploitasi pun berjalan.
Meski PT SIP yang telah melakukan operasi tetapi pada tanggal 29 Juni 2007, Bupati Kabupaten Jayapura, mengeluarkan Rekomendasi, tentang Perusahaan yang berhak mengelola hasil tambang di Kabupaten Jayapura yaitu PT.TABLASUPA NICKEL MINING, berhak mengelola Tambang Nickel di Tablasupa
PT.Tablasupa Nickel Mining melakukan presentase Visi dan Misi namun hasil presentasi tidak disetujui masyarakat karena syarat-syarat yang diberikan masyarakat ke pihak Perusahaan tidak dipenuhi.
Berikut PT.SINAR INDAH PERKASA (SIP) melakukan pendekatan kepada Ondoafi Kampung Tablasupa Obaja Apaseray dan kawan. Namun selanjutnya mendapat penolakan dari warga dan kini operasi PT SIP terhenti.
PT SIP bukan saja beroperasi di Kabupaten Jayapura tetapi saat ini sedang melakukan eksplotasi di TOR Atas Kabupaten Sarmi.
Pada tanggal 29 Januari 2008, Rapat bersama Pemda.Kabupaten Jayapura dan Pemda.Propinsi Papua, tentang keabsaan SK.Nomor: 158, ijin operasi PT.Sinar Indah Perkasa(SIP) , oleh Gubernur di areal Pertambagan Nikel Tablasupa. Pokok mendasar dari pertemuan tersebut adalah areal Pertambagan Nickel Tablasupa termasuk kewenangan wilayah Kabupaten Jayapura, bukan kewenangan Propinsi. Hal senada juga dilontarkan Ketua DPRD Kabupaten Jayapura Johanes Elluay tentang ijin yang diberikan tanpa sepengetahuan tuan rumah atau pemilik rumah.
Permukiman kaki gunung Cykloop awal 1985 dan 1992 serta aktivitas perambahan hutan untuk berbagai keperluan masih berlangsung. Aktivitas ini misalnya berlangsung di Waena, Skyaline,Ifar Gunung,Sereh, Pos Tujuh, Polomo, Kemiri dan Doyo.
Kemudian 1993 kegiatan penggalian bahan golongan C, seperti batu dan pasir di beberapa aliran sungai mulai berlangsung. Penduduk Kota Jayapura saat ini baru mencapai 300.000 jiwa sedangkan Kabupaten Jayapura hanya sekitar 200.000 jiwa. Lajunya jumlah penduduk ini semakin memperkeruh persoalan Cagar Alam Cykloop karena tekanan ekonomi atau lahan permukiman yang semakin terbatas.
Menurut data dari WWF Region Sahul Papua di kaki Gunung Cykloop 34 anak-anak sungai tetapi yang masih mengalir lancar hanya 14 anak sungai saja. (Dominggus A. Mampioper)

PT Freeport Indonesia adalah perusahaan tambang paling tua beroperasi di Indonesia. Bahkan perusahaan tambang Amerika Serikat inilah yang mengarahkan kebijakan pertambangan Indonesia. Terbukti Kontrak Karya (KK) PT FI ditetapkan sebelum UU No 11 tahun 1967 tentang pertambangan Umum. Dan catatan buruk akibat dampak pertambangannya di Papua sangatlah luar biasa.

Dimulai dengan digusurnya ruang penghidupan suku-suku di pegunungan tengah Papua. Tanah-tanah adat tujuh suku, diantaranya suku Amungme dan Nduga dirampas awal masuknya PT FI dan dihancurkan saat operasi tambang berlangsung. Limbah tailing PT FI telah meniumbun sekitar 110 km2 wilayah estuari tercemar, sedangkan 20 – 40 km bentang sungai Ajkwa beracun dan 133 km2 lahan subur terkubur. Saat periode banjir datang, kawasan-kawasan suburpun tercemar Perubahan arah sungai Ajkwa menyebabkan banjir, kehancuran hutan hujan tropis (21 km2), dan menyebabkan daerah yang semula kering menjadi rawa. Para ibu tak lagi bisa mencari siput di sekitar sungai yang merupakan sumber protein bagi keluarga. Gangguan kesehatan juga terjadi akibat masuknya orang luar ke Papua. Timika, kota tambang PT FI , adalah kota dengan penderita HIV AIDS tertinggi di Indonesia.


Ironisnya, disaat penghasilan PT FI naik dua kali lihat pada tahun 2005, hingga mencapai 4 kali PDRB Papua. Index Pembangunan Manusia (IPM) Papua berada di urutan ke 29. Dari 33 propinsi. Nilai IPM diekspresikan dengan tingginya angka kematian ibu hamil dan balita akibat kurang gizi. Lebih parah lagi, “kantong-kantong kemiskinan” di yang berada di kawasan konsesi pertambangan PT FI mencapai angka di atas 35%. Menjadi sangat ironis. Disaat gaji dan tunjangan dua orang CEO PT FI (James Moffet dan Richard Aderson) mencapat US$ 207,3 juta, pendapatan rata-rata penduduk Papua kurang dari US$ 240 per tahun. Hasil Audit BPK tahun 20056, atas pengelolaan penerimaan negara bukan pajak pada Departemen ESDM dan PT FI untuk tahun anggaran 2004 205 menunjukkan Indonesia belum mendapatkan hasil optimal dari KK PT FI.

Secara khusus perusahaan membayar militer untuk mengamankan perusahaannya. Dalam aporan resmi tahunan Freeport tertulis telah memberikan sejumlah US$ 6,9 juta pada tahun 2004, lalu US$ 5,9 juta pada tahun 2003, dan US$ 5,6 juta pada tahun 2002 kepada militer (TNI). Hampir setiap tahun, perusahaan selalu melaporkan telah membiayai TNI untuk melindungi keamanan tambangnya. Daftar panjang pelanggaran HAM juga terjadi disekitar pertambangan PT FI. Intimidasi adalah kondisi keseharian yang harus dihadapi warga sekitar tambang.


Bergabungnya jajaran ahli ekologi, akademisi, ekonom, pengamat HAM, gender dan kesehatan yang terpelajar dan ternama ke jajaran Badan penasehat PT FI, seperti Prof. Otto Soemarwoto, Prof. Dr. Oekan Abdullah, Dr. .M. Chatib Basri, Prof. Dr. Farid Anfasa Moeloek hingga HS Dillon. Ternyata, sama sekali tak berpengaruh merubah perilaku PT FI. Sebaliknya, mereka manjadi alat penguat klaim Freeport sebagai perusahaan yang bertanggung jawab.

Anenya hingga saat ini tak ada tindakan signifikan apapun yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah terhadap PT Freeport. Wajar jika rakyat Papua menuduh pemerintah Indonesia hanya merampok kekayaan mereka. Aksi-aksi yang terus mendesak pertambangan ini dikaji ulang atau segera ditutup terus merebak.
